Department of Biomedical Sciences (BMI) is an interdisciplinary department, which covers seven research themes with a common point of reference: 'basic biomedical research with emphasis on translational potential'.

The Department's research is translational and placed in the cross-field between basic health research and the clinic/industry. The aim of our research is to generate new knowledge that can be used in the prevention and treatment of diseases, for example diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and cancer.

Biotech Research & Innovation Centre (BRIC) was established in 2003 by the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation to form an elite centre in biomedical research.

Mission & aims

BRIC’s mission is devoted to biomedical research, primarily within cancer and neurological diseases. Our goal is to contribute to a basic understanding of how and why disease occurs, to discover new disease-related genes, potential targets and biomarkers, in order to provide more efficient treatments for patients.

Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR) was established in 2010 at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

The establishment of the Center was made possible by a generous (DKK 885 million), unrestricted grant from the Foundation. In 2018 the Novo Nordisk Foundation awarded new strategic funding to the Center (DKK 700 million).

Vision

To strengthen interdisciplinary research that transforms the basic understanding of the mechanisms involved in metabolic health and disease, and to accelerate this knowledge toward new prevention and treatment strategies.

Center for Healthy Aging is a research center focusing on how more people can have a healthy life and healthy aging. Our approach to research is interdisciplinary and the center studies aging and aging processes from cell to society.

Center for Healthy Aging is a network of research units, most of which are currently located at the University of Copenhagen and the Dean of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, Bente Merete Stallknecht, has the overall responsibility for the center. The other research units are based at the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Social Sciences as well as a number of hospitals. 

Vision

Our vision is to make Denmark the world's best country to grow old in. 

Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research (CPR) was established in 2007 at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, to promote basic and applied discovery research on human proteins of medical relevance.

The establishment of the centre was made possible by a generous donation of 600 million DKK (~113 MUSD) from the Novo Nordisk Foundation as well as through significant contributions from the University of Copenhagen for the renovation of the centre facilities.

The Novo Nordisk Foundation donated 180 million DKK to CPR in 2015, and in 2019 an additional 700 million DKK to fund CPR 2.0 in the next 5-year period. 

The Center for Health Data Science (HeaDS) was stablished on March 1st, 2020 as a part of Faculty Service at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (SUND) and it is led by Professor Anders Krogh.
Many of the leading data science research groups at the Faculty are part of the HeaDS network, with hub membership expanding every year to new members.

The main mission of the Center is to strengthen health data science within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (SUND) at the University of Copenhagen and serve as a hub for researchers using health Data Science.

The Department of Neuroscience (IN) is part of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen and is physically located in the Panum Building and at the Maersk Tower in central Copenhagen.

Neuroscience is a major strategic focus area for the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at University of Copenhagen and as a consequence the Department of Neuroscience, which has its roots from the previous Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology, was officially established 1st of September 2017. The purpose was to gather research groups committed to neuroscience with educational activities within neuroscience in one organizational unit.

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Stem Cell Medicine, reNEW, is based on a tripartite international partnership between the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, Leiden University Medical Centre, The Netherlands and the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, Australia.

Together, these three sites combine to provide research excellence as well as opportunities and experience around stem cell disease modeling for drug development, cellular therapies for tissue regeneration and regenerative medicine. The partners mutually reinforce and synergistically support the required elements for translation in stem cell medicine: excellence in basic science, capacity building and training, state of the art research infrastructure, clinical and commercial translation capacity, and public engagement.

Importantly, the involvement of these partners ensures a capacity to address childhood and adult disease, pluripotent and tissue stem cell products, and all other areas of stem cell medicine.

Stem cell medicine refers to the development of novel therapies based upon the application of stem cells. This encompasses stem cell-based cellular therapies and regenerative medicine, novel therapies identified via the use of human stem cell-derived tissue models, and gene editing to develop novel cell types.

The ‘LEO Foundation Skin Immunology Research Center’ paves the way to a better understanding and treatment of the skin diseases that plague a quarter of the world's population.

Based on a grant from the LEO Foundation of more than 50 million EUR over 10 years the center will bring together leading Danish and international researchers in immunology and skin disease to provide new knowledge to enable better diagnostics and more effective treatments for a wide range of skin diseases such as psoriasis and eczema.
